2012 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Preview

The West Virginia Mountaineers are another one of the new members to the Big 12 Conference following the 2011 season. Located in Morgantown, West Virginia, the Mountaineers have been playing football in 1891. West Virginia has been apart of three conferences in their history, including spending some time as an independent. The Mountaineers were in the Big East beginning in 1991, but are now sitting at the adult's table playing in the Big 12. West Virginia plays at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, which can seat a capacity crowd of 60,000. In their history, they have won 15 conference championships although they have yet to claim a national title. West Virginia has had 11 consensus All Americans in the past, but never a Heisman Trophy winner.

2012 West Virginia Mountaineers Outlook

It will be a new scene for West Virginia and their fans this season, as they will welcome the Big 12 conference into their stadium... not to mention they will be doing quite a bit more traveling out to the Midwest to play their conference games. But this team isn't coming in just to play, they are expecting to win some games behind Heisman Trophy candidate Geno Smith. The Mountaineers should be ranked somewhere in the top-20 on the preseason rankings, and will definitely make their presence in the Big 12 known in their inaugural season. Smith could have a field day with Big 12 defenses, though they can't be much worse than those in the Big East that he faced throughout this career. Still, big thing are expected from Smith and this Mountaineer offense. And, going toe-to-toe with the Big 12 offenses we saw last year, there are definitely going to be a lot of fireworks.
