2012 Tennessee Volunteers Football Preview
The Tennessee Volunteers compete in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. The Tennessee football program goes all the way back to 1891. Located in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Volunteers play in one of the largest venues in the country. Neyland Stadium can hold 103,000 fans, making for one of the loudest atmospheres in college football. The Volunteers are rich with a winning tradition, winning 16 conference championships and six national titles. But they have produced no Heisman Trophy winners. The Volunteers won the first ever national title game in the BCS Era back during the 1998-99 season. Tennessee has a number of rival games from their division, but its in-state school Vanderbilt, as well as Alabama who are probably their two biggest.
2012 Tennessee Volunteers Outlook
The Tennessee Volunteers continued to go through the growing pains of rebuilding, winning just one conference game last season en route to a 5-7 record overall. The Vols are not picked to contend for the SEC East this season, but are expected to get better. It will have to start on offense. Tennessee managed just 20 points per game last season, which ranked 106th in the country. They also ranked 116th in rushing, so it's pretty clear where the improvement needs to come from. At 35/1 to win the SEC, it still looks to be a couple of years off before the Vols challenge for Atlanta.
